EICMA 2019 Kawasaki primo costruttore giapponese a dotare le proprie moto dei sistemi avanzati di assistenza alla guida di Bosch

  • Advanced Bosch driver assistance systems for motorcycles will be available on future Kawasaki models; mass production will begin in 2021
  • More relaxed and safe driving thanks to the combination of radar sensor, braking system, engine management and Bosch HMI
  • Geoff Liersch, President of the Two-Wheeler and Powersports business unit from Bosch, said: "Bosch continues to make driving safer, more efficient and more enjoyable around the world."

The advanced motorcycling assistance systems from Bosch will equip the Kawasaki models that will be produced in series from 2021. It is the first time that a Japanese motorcycle manufacturer announces the integration of Bosch driver assistance technologies into their vehicles at two wheels. "Bosch continues to make driving safer, more efficient and more enjoyable around the world and it is an honor for us to be able to supply our systems to Kawasaki," said Geoff Liersch, President of Bosch's Two-Wheeler & Powersports business unit.

Cars can be made safer by adding deformation zones, airbags and seat belts. For motorcyclists, however, the dangers to be faced on the road are greater: the risk of losing one's life in an accident is up to 20 times higher than that of motorists. Advanced driver assistance systems improve safety and comfort for motorcyclists: they include Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Forward Collision Warning and Blind Spot Detection. The technology on which they are based combines radar sensors, braking system, engine management and man-machine interface (HMI). According to Bosch accident research, radar-based assistance systems could avoid one in seven motorcycle accidents.

These electronic assistants constantly monitor and, in the event of an emergency, react more quickly than people can. Yuji Horiuchi, President of the Motorcycle & Engine Company of Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd., said: "We are pleased to announce that our motorcycles will be equipped with the advanced driver assistance systems from Bosch, which will provide greater safety to the rider. We are certain that, with the help of these systems, Kawasaki driving will become more fun and satisfying for even more motorcyclists ".

ACC rider - Adaptive Cruise Control

Driving in heavy traffic and maintaining an adequate safety distance from the vehicle in question requires a great deal of concentration and, on long journeys, can be very tiring. The ACC regulates the speed of the motorcycle based on the traffic flow and maintains the necessary safety distance. In this way, rear-end collisions caused by an insufficient safety distance can be effectively prevented. The ACC not only offers convenient help, but also allows riders to concentrate more on the road, particularly in heavy traffic.

Forward collision warning

In traffic, even the slightest distraction can have serious consequences. Bosch has developed a collision warning system for motorcycles to reduce the risk of a collision or to mitigate the consequences. If it detects that another vehicle is dangerously close and the rider does not react to the situation, it alerts him with an audible or visual signal.

Blind spot detection

This system covers the entire field of view around the bike to help riders change lanes safely. A radar sensor acts as an electronic eye of the blind spot recognition system. Whenever a vehicle enters the rider's blind spot, the technology alerts him via a visual signal, for example in the rear-view mirror.

The concept of integral safety: three steps towards uneventful mobility

Bosch is developing new technologies for motorcycle safety, adopting an integral three-stage safety concept. The first phase consists in improving the stability of the bikes with ABS and Motorcycle Stability Control (MSC). Currently ABS is mandatory on new models in different countries and regions, including Japan, the European Union, India, Taiwan, Brazil and China (in the EU it is also mandatory on all types of existing vehicles), while in Australia it will become mandatory on new models by 2019. The second phase concerns advanced driver assistance systems that use detection technologies from the surrounding areas. The third phase takes into consideration security technologies based on connectivity between the vehicle and the surrounding environment, such as bike-to-vehicle communication and automatic emergency call system for motorcycles. With this broad spectrum security concept, Bosch will continue to develop innovative technology to provide safer driving without having to give up the fun.
